Volume 15, Issue 447

There's a lot of stories in the news today about Airbnb, a website where you can make your house available for people to stay in for a few days. People used to buy expensive security systems to keep you out of their homes and now they're suddenly, like, “Let's invite a stranger to come in here and touch everything.”
-James Corden

We've given away over $418,000 to subscribers. See the E-Smarts to B-Smart contest. Now you can enter via Email and/or on Facebook. Did you win? (See below to find out.)

Thank You Arlington
By Bill Floyd

Interesting how most industry folks will tell you we need to LISTEN to each other. We need to hear what customers want. "We need to satisfy the needs of our Reps and Distributors". That's what they say. "We need to learn from each other, to get a fresh perspective". Well that's exactly what Arlington Industries did this month when they asked ElectricSmarts (me) to speak at their annual sales meeting. The point was for them to learn more about business on the internet - Marketing, e Biz, IDW Relationships, Contractor Bidding and more. And, for me to learn more about them.

New Contest - Win a $500 Amazon Card

We continue to have fun and give out lots of money with our contest below. But it occurred to me how many of you we meet along the way say nice things about our ElectricSmarts offering.
  • The Content Pages that we provide to Distributors with Manufacturer information.
  • Our eNewsletter Builder Tool, again for Distributors.
  • Our Smart eCat, for everybody.
  • NetPak for Contractors (and Distributors) (and now Manufacturers)
  • Estimating Software Integration - Contractors, Distributors, Manufacturers
  • IDW Data deployment and Contractor  "Gateways" - for the entire industry
  • Mobile Apps and more
So, we decided to do a YouTube type thing and ask you to take a selfie video identifying yourself and saying what you like about ElectricSmarts, or how it makes your job easier. Each quarter we will say thank you by drawing an entry and awarding a $500 Amazon Gift Certificate. This is a great way for us to get your feedback and for you to get a little extra cash. Send to bfloyd@electricsmarts.com.

Oh yeah, don't forget to look below at our B-Smart Contest. It  gives you the opportunity to win and learn every month.

This Month's Smart eCat Features: Kraloy

With the popularity of the Internet, the world has changed. SMART eCAT is now one new important way. Each month we will feature a new manufacturer’s electronic SMART eCAT that will show how looking up products and using manufacturer’s catalogs have never been easier. This “eCatalog Collection” now also appears on our distributor partner and manufacturer rep’s websites as well. Auto-Monitoring GFCI Receptacles Now the Law of the Land
Chuck Ross

Since the 1970s, ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) have boosted the safety of electrical receptacles by shutting off current to the outlet upon detection of a ground fault on the line. Once installed, these wiring devices were intended to be manually tested at least monthly by users, according to UL 943, the Underwriters Laboratories standard that guided their design. However, recognizing that consumers rarely, if ever, pushed the test and reset buttons to ensure successful operation was maintained, an updated version of that UL standard now requires monitoring to happen automatically, within the device.

Legrand Offers Three New Dimmer Packages
James R. Dukart

Legrand Electrical Wiring Systems has rolled out three new sets of dimmer switches in the past year, all aimed at both residential and commercial applications.

First, in April, Legrand rolled out its new Pass & Seymour LS Series of CFL/LED/Incandescent dimmers and Wide Slide CFL/LED/Incandescent dimmers. The new LS Series dimmers offers CFL/LED Single Pole and 3-Way configurations, with wattage ratings of 450W for CFL/LED and 700W for incandescent.

Wiring Devices Can Still Face Extraordinary Challenges in “Ordinary” Locations
Chuck Ross

From an electrical contractor’s viewpoint, so-called “ordinary” locations can be anything but run-of-the-mill. They may not face the risks of hazardous locations, but installations in “ordinary” locations can still require heavy-duty plugs, receptacles and other wiring devices, especially in high-amperage applications.

The phrase “ordinary location” can be misleading at first glance. The National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) use this term simply to differentiate “hazardous locations” – those areas in which fire or explosion risks exist, due to flammable gases, combustible dust or ignitable fibers or flyings – from other areas in a plant or facility.
