Volume 16, Issue 452

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said yesterday that he will become a “part-time vegetarian” to cut down his carbon footprint. If you’re wondering what a part-time vegetarian is, it’s someone who eats meat.

ElectricSmarts: Year #16
By Bill Floyd

In 2000, when ESmarts launched, few understood the potential of the internet. Frankly, with all we know now, we're still only scraping the surface.

Too many sellers still are only dipping their toes in the vibrant current of online commerce. They are still only dabbling rather than committing. They are partnering with companies that appear to have general internet expertise but that expertise is either inches deep or little or none of that experience is in the industry they serve. Other companies choose to go it alone. But that is the costliest route of all. And, by doing so they deprive themselves of the best practice experience of others. The old saying is, "You don't know what you don't know".

The National Association of Independent Lighting Distributors was founded in 1977 by a group of lighting specialist distributors and has grown steadily since then. The association’s membership is made up of lighting distributors, vendor manufacturers of lighting equipment, products and supplies used by our MRO, contractor and facility end-user customers. Use our mobile app to explore catalogs, search products, view videos, create product lists, and more.

This Month's Smart eCat Features: Hubbell Industrial Lighting

With the popularity of the Internet, the world has changed. SMART eCAT is now one new important way. Each month we will feature a new manufacturer’s electronic SMART eCAT that will show how looking up products and using manufacturer’s catalogs have never been easier. This “eCatalog Collection” now also appears on our distributor partner and manufacturer rep’s websites as well. We encourage you to look for these there and deal with the companies with which you already have close relationships and work hard to serve your everyday needs.

New Fuse Takes the Heat Out of Arc-Flash Events
Chuck Ross

The dangers of arc flash have become much better understood over the last decade or so, and the National Electrical Code (NEC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), along with equipment manufacturers, have made significant moves to address and limit potential risks. For facility owners, fixes can prove expensive, but a new solution developed for medium-voltage transformers proves that improving safety needn’t require a significant hit to the bottom-line.

Quick Guide to Choosing the Right Hand Tools
Steve Maurer, IME

After 30 years as an industrial electrician, I have a toolbox full of hand tools. There are all kinds of screwdrivers, wire cutters and strippers, and pliers. There are some specialty tools that you won't find anywhere except in electrical supply houses.

This quick guide will help you choose the best quality tools. Tools that will last and that you can depend on. For example, I have a pair of lineman's pliers that still do the job after 30 years.

Bringing Circuit Protection to the Booming Solar Market
Chuck Ross

Solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation has been growing at an almost exponential rate over the last several years. In just the second quarter of 2015, U.S. contractors installed 1,393 megawatts of PV generation capacity, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association and GTM Research. Like any electrical installation, a PV array requires circuit protection – however, because this equipment operates in a very demanding environment, not just any fuse will do the job.
