"Even many of the most fervent e-distributors report no more than 3% of their business originating this way."  - "Doesn't it cost a fortune to build an e-commerce site?" Is it worth it? - "How do I promote and support it?" - "What role do my suppliers play?" Enough, enough!

This Issue's Question: Who just announced a collaboration with NuLEDs™, Inc., a leader in Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) lighting systems, aimed at making buildings smarter and seamlessly securely connected?

Need Your Lighting Controlled? Just Ask Alexa (or Siri)
Chuck Ross

One of the most talked about new approaches to home automation is the voice-control capabilities introduced with Amazon’s line of “Alexa”-enabled devices, from the original Echo speaker and personal assistant, to the Echo Dot and recently upgraded Amazon Tap and Amazon Fire TV. Originally, the Echo wasn’t much more than a cool way to access online music services, but since its November 2014 launch, Echo and its Alexa voice-recognition and command system have become compatible with a range of residential lighting, security and entertainment devices to allow easy operation with a voice request, like, “Alexa, turn on the living room lights.”

Control Cables and Fire Safety
Steve Maurer, IME

I've worked on the installation and maintenance of fire alarm and fire suppression systems. Quite a few over the years, to be exact.

And while I knew the importance of the control cabling, I wasn't aware that the cable could be part of the dangerous conditions during a fire.

Bluetooth Cuts the Wires Between Lighting and Controls
Chuck Ross

Digital lighting control, with the ability to set timers and dimming levels for one-time or recurring events, once required sophisticated, hardwired digital addressable lighting interface (DALI, for short) systems. Now such capabilities are becoming available with both easier installation and operation. The intelligence of these products is built into individual lamps and switches, so a central controller is no longer necessary, and with operation via smartphone-based apps, programing their operations is easier than ever.

Online Tools From T&B Save Time and Money
