Lutron's Joel Spira - An Industry Giant 1927-2015

Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, and Joel Spira are three giants in industry that took their vision and changed a corner of the world. Each of them were closely associated with their companies and drove and expanded their distinct visions to the benefit of us all. On April 8th Joel Spira passed away. In 2010, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History accepted Spira’s personal papers and other materials linked with the company's history as part of the collection that also includes Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. He is credited with more than 300 design and utiity patents in the US and 2,700 patents across the globe.

First, the company’s 854DX Electric Conduit Bender is a versatile, portable, accurate and reliable bender with several labor and dollar-saving features. The bender features a single shoe that can handle 1/2” to 2” EMT, IMC and Rigid conduit.

Industrial display panels are catching up with consumer electronic displays. Electricians and operators who are comfortable with smart phones will appreciate the increasing sophistication of automation display panels.

Industrial touch screen technology was delayed by cautious considerations. Unlike a touch screen of a restaurant cash register, an “Oops” entry could cause disastrous damage to a machine. The touch screen had to be redesigned to eliminate common unwanted inputs. Touches from dust, dirt, insects, electrical noise, and unintentional touching had to be rejected.
