Houston, We Have a Problem

Houston, We Have a Problem

Bill Floyd
From the beginning President Trump has been saying we're all Americans. Whether black or white, Asian or Indian, Jewish, Muslim, or Catholic, the color of the blood we all bleed is red. There is no distinction made when one of our military heroes gives his or her life to protect our freedom. They are simply one of us. This has now again been amplified with Houston's Hurricane Harvey tragedy.

My neighbors and yours have mobilized. National Guard from across the country deployed. Folks loaded trucks and sent supplies. Boat owners volunteered. A bar owner in Boston organized a group of friends and acquaintances and headed south to help. J.J. Watt established a financial goal to get NFL fans to donate to the needs of the displaced and raised so much that he blew by it and continually established new goals. Others have duplicated his effort. The caring and donations continued to generate and regenerate.

The pictures on TV showed you neighbor helping neighbor with only regard for each other's humanity. We can easily imagine ourselves in each victim's place losing everything, wiping out all the mementos of our past. We can see ourselves standing on roofs, clinging to trees, losing loved ones, pets, etc. If roles were reversed, we would greatly appreciate anybody who would reach out their hands to us. The selfless volunteers make us proud. It's a staunch reminder of what it really means to be an American and it further frustrates us as to why we continue to put up with the lack of cohesiveness and empathy that continues with our Washington Politicians. Like the rest of us, they should be pulling together for our mutual benefit.

Again, we're all Americans and efforts such as what's happening in Houston is what we're all about. I encourage you to pledge to move yourself and your elected officials in a more positive direction.

Also, if you haven't already done so please join us and participate in the Houston relief effort. Below is just a couple of ways to do so. The old saying goes if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem. We need all of us to step up and we need it now.

Salvation Army

Red Cross

PS: As I'm writing this Hurricane Irma is bearing down on Florida. Hopefully it will find its way out to sea but if not we can only make sure that whatever adversity we have to deal with us makes us stronger. We have no other choice.
