"Nobody Ever Drowned in His Own Sweat" - Ann Landers

Paul Werthman
Hard to believe that August is a mere stone's throw away! Historically, August 1, 1957, The United States and Canada formed the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Due to a Sears-Roebuck ad misprint (wrong phone number) a child called to check where Santa was the evening of December, 24, 1957, and NORAD has been tracking Santa every Christmas Eve since then.

On August 3, 1977, The Tandy Corporation (remember Radio Shack?) announced the TRS-80, one of the first mass-produced personal computers. It came with an unheard 4kb of RAM! August 7, 1944, IBM announced the first program-controlled calculator, the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, known as the Harvard Mark I. It used 765,000 components and weighed close to 5 tons.
Makes me think twice when I call my laptop heavy these days! And one of my favorites, on August 8, 1989, STS-28 Mission: Space Shuttle Columbia took off on a secret five-day military mission. It landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on August 13. That’s all we have ever been told!
