Thoughts on the Gov’t Shutdown

Paul Werthman
As I write this editorial, our US Government is still in shutdown mode. It is extremely disheartening to see the 800,000 + essential personnel who are working without paychecks while being told that they can do odd-jobs on the side or sell belongings on eBay to supplement their loss of income.

The facts on the matter are that our elected Government officials will not work together for the betterment of the people. Instead, it boils down to partisan politics and ideological concepts.

I can recall the days when Democrats and Republicans would work together for the well-being of the country while putting their personal disdain aside. I believe that as our political system hits rock-bottom in capabilities and performance, that we will again see cooperation between the two parties for the common good of our country.

As a Phoenix rising from the ashes, I truly believe that a new group of younger leaders will rise to the occasion, jointly working to solve our pressing issues. It won’t happen overnight but it will happen. That’s not being overly optimistic, it’s simply believing that a new set of leaders will recognize the issues and will commit to repairing the national divide.

I recall the relationship between President Reagan and Speaker Tip O’Neill. While they disagreed on political issues, they were good friends that worked together to solve national issues. When the President was shot during an attempted assassination, the Speaker visited his friend in the hospital. President Reagan commented that “He forgot to duck”. Those days may be gone for now, but I believe that they will return. I believe in our country and I believe in our political system, therefore I believe that our up and coming leadership will solve our dysfunctionality. That’s right, I BELIEVE.
