Bypass Switches for Drives and Inverters

Bypass Switches for Drives and Inverters

Peter Walsh, PE

Bypass switches are often used on variable speed drives. In a perfect world there would be no need for bypass switches. But they are important when motor operation is required at the same time as a variable speed drive needs maintenance. The bypass switch reroutes the power around the drive directly to the motor.

Pump and fan motors often have variable speed drives for energy efficiency. The savings are substantial enough so that many buildings are retrofitted with these drives.
