Volume 15, Issue 438

The water I was heating for pasta refused to boil, and if my 12-year-old son was right, I wasn’t helping by constantly checking on it.

“It’s like that old saying,” he said. “ A watched website never loads.”

Our Industry Needs to Have More Fun. Kudos to NAED For Giving It To Us.
By Bill Floyd

THD Rocks NAED. Click here to view.

Years ago an important part of our job was building relationships. We knew everybody. We worked hard and partied hard. Knowing everybody meant spending time with each other beyond just the nuts and bolts tasks of selling products and having business meetings. In short, having fun was part of what we did. Thankfully, I was part of the very end of that generation. That group made relationship-building an art.

Refined PQ Comes to the Factory Floor
Peter Walsh, PE

Power Quality problems are most often corrected by adding a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). They were originally used in environmentally controlled, clean data rooms. Their environment had to be temperature controlled and the unit needed dust-free air for cooling.
They were effective, but delicate.

Now sensitive electronics are everywhere, not just in protected data centers. UPS manufacturers are providing power quality to wherever electronic systems are used. They have all the features of a refined data center UPS, but they need the toughness to be out on the factory floor.

Control Transformers Ensure Electronics-Friendly Power on Plant Floors
Chuck Ross

Industrial control loads – from CNC machines to semiconductor fabrication equipment – are becoming increasingly sophisticated, which means they’re also becoming more sensitive to voltage fluctuations. And, as more of these digitally driven devices are added to a facility’s distribution system, the need for sophisticated control transformers capable of handling high inrush current also is increasing.

Power Quality for Simple Automation
Peter Walsh, PE

Lack of Power Quality can be the cause of automation accidents, even with small applications. Industrial automation is everywhere and when it’s operating normally, it’s productive and safe. However, when voltage transients damage the automated controls, or power is lost, things become unpredictable.

Typical automation with a simple PLC controller is often used with a compact UPS. This is just for the control circuits, not for the motors. If the normal power is lost, the UPS will continue to provide power to the automation controls. When power is restored, the controls will be ready to operate safely instead of starting back in an unpredictable state.

Deploying GFCIs in the Real World
Tony Quebbemann, Molex Incorporated

Ground fault circuit interrupters can protect workers from the risk of electrical shock and injury in wet and hazardous settings.

Workplace safety is everyone’s business, and most industrial companies in North America have made safety a top priority over the past few decades. Accidents, injuries, and even death on the job still occur. In 2012 over 4,300 fatalities were reported in the workplace. 156 were caused by electrocution.
