It's Fashion Week in New York City and the cold was playing havoc earlier today. It got so cold that a supermodel actually snapped in half.

On Money Ball, The Oakland A's and The Electrical Industry (Part 1 of 4)
By Bill Floyd

In "The Boxer" Paul Simon sang, "A man sees what he wants to see and disregards the rest."

At the latest NAED meeting in San Antonio, Paul DePodesta, former assistant GM of the Oakland A's, was the keynote speaker. He and GM Billy Beane were featured in the popular book and movie Money Ball. His talk was about baseball but it was really about CHANGE. The same change that the electrical industry, and other industries, are undergoing through today.

Improvements in Network Patch Panels
Peter Walsh, PE

Some electrical contractors install data and communication systems that few others can see. They have people trained to install these specialized cables and connectors. These systems are so important to security and business operations, the patch panels and terminations are locked up and have security procedures.

LED Track Lighting Applications
James R. Dukart

Juno Lighting Group has added new products and to its Track Lighting Applications for 2015.

First, the company’s LED wall wash/flood fixtures for line-voltage trac have been broadened with the introduction of the T258L and T259L models. The T258L and T259L fixtures offer efficacies as high as 88 lumens per watt, while producing up to nearly 4,700 lumens from the 57-watt version and up to over 2,600 lumens from the 30-watt version. They consume less energy than similar CMH fixtures, and with a rated service life of 50,000 hours, last about four-times longer, says the company.

The Cost of Multimedia Outlet Appearances
Peter Walsh, PE

The cost of keeping up appearances is often overlooked. For instance, multimedia outlets are most often located in a meeting room or classroom. The customer wants them to look good because of their visibility. This requires additional labor to clean up plaster dust, and to select plate covers to match power outlet and switches.

Customers expect the electricians to repair damage caused by other trades. If a painter slops on the cover plate, or the furniture mover slams a desk into it, the electrical contractor repairs the damage. If the outlet was in the stairwell or some inconspicuous location, the repair might not be required.
