Data Center Bonding

Peter Walsh, PE

Data centers have extensive bonding and grounding requirements. All the data center equipment has to be electrically bonded together and then to ground. This is accomplished by bonding jumpers, which are often specified as fine strand wire for rack equipment.

The National Electrical Code in sections 250.70 and 110.14 requires that bonding uses a listed connector. It further states that any connection suitable for fine strand wire shall be identified for the specific type. Ordinary building wire acts differently in a compression connector than fine strand wire such as UL Class G, H, I, K, and M.
