One of big problems with installing too many “smart” devices in the home can be that users can sometimes feel too “dumb” (or at least confused/frustrated or under informed) to connect them all.

The Ascend 7-Day, In-Wall Programmable Timer is designed to take away that feeling or reservation. Made by Intermatic, the Ascend is designed to allow contractors easy installation and homeowners seamless access to a wide range of high-tech applications such as lighting and security/access control.

“Smart device manufacturers often miss the mark by overlooking the needs of contractors during initial installation and setup,” said Kimberly Durkot, a segment marketing manager at Intermatic. “Ascend offers an intuitive interface, pre-programmed schedule templates and a range of mobile programming options that allow contractors to fully install the device and pass control to the homeowner in minutes – all without a network connection or smart home hub.”

Ascend Smart enables installers and homeowners to create and update schedules on the fly using any Apple or Android device via the Ascend Smart Timer app. Once onboarded, homeowners can also use voice commands to control their Ascend Smart through integration with Amazon Alexa.

Designed for home lighting and light motor applications, Ascend features a large backlit LCD and pre-programmed templates, as well as Astronomic dusk-to-dawn settings and automatic Daylight Saving Time adjustment.

Additional features and characteristics include that Ascend does not require Wi-Fi for initial set-up and configuration. The timer can be fully set and scheduled with any smartphone or tablet using a secure peer-to-peer channel.

Ascend’s pre-programmed schedule templates fit 80 to 90 percent of application needs, while smartphone programming makes initial set-up quick and easy. Since the timer requires no hub, it can pair immediately with Amazon Alexa for voice-activated commands including on/off and status check.

“Both consumers and installers value simplicity when it comes to smart devices,” added Durkot. “By finding a balance between ease of access and overall functionality, we’ve created a solution that’s tailored to meet the needs of everyone involved.”
