The days of locating onsite generation or an electrical outlet in order to cut cable appear to be waning.

Similarly, contractors and electricians who need to cut cable can now do so with far less strain on their arms or backs, thanks to new lines of battery-operated hand held cable cutters such as those now being offered by BURNDY.

The company’s PATRIOT PATCUT1500 Cable Cutter, for instance, is a compact, easy to use, mechanically actuated cutting tool that incorporates the latest in battery tool technology. The ergonomic design and positioning of controls provide single-handed operation and reduced operator fatigue for increased productivity.

It features a powerful motor and durable blade assembly with stainless steel tooth guards designed to ensure both precision cutting and longer blade life. Cutting capacities are up to 1000 kcmil Copper, 1250 kcmil Copper Flex, and 1500 kcmil Aluminum.

The tool is powered by the Makita BL Series lithium-ion battery platform and accepts 2.0Ah-6.0Ah 18-volt batteries, compatible with the entire lithium-ion line of PATRIOT battery tools. Ergonomic design features include a non-skid leveling bumper, variable speed trigger, and a sliding forward/reverse switch with locking position for additional safety. Each tool also features an on-board work light and comfort grip to ease the strain on worker’s eyes and hands.

For utility and telecommunications workers needing to cut electrical or communications cables outdoors, BURNDY now offers its new PATCUT954HS Long Reach, Insulated, Hydraulic Cable Cutting tools.

The PATCUT954HS Hot Stick Cable Cutter (available in 82” and 94” lengths) provides both increased flashover protection and extended reach for live line cutting. The large capacity C-Head is designed to hook onto conductors, stabilizing the tool for easy cutting, up to 954 kcmil ACSR.

The tool performs cuts in less than 15 seconds, minimizing exertion and time required when using similar manual or ratchet type models on hard to reach, energized overhead or underground lines.

The tool’s pistol grip and adjustable assist handle allow for extra control when operating overhead, while the rapid advance ram reduces time on live lines, adding to the overall ergonomics and safety of the system. Large on/off triggers and hand grip area also enhance the user experience.

The PATCUT954HS features protected electronic circuitry and a patented high-speed hydraulic pump system and is powered by Makita 18-volt lithium-ion batteries for long-lasting power.

The cutter is multi-Ah capable, accepting 2.0Ah through 6.0Ah sizes. It is offered with a choice of either 3.0Ah or 5.0Ah batteries, with a lifetime warranty on the electronic circuitry along with a 5-year limited warranty for the tool, excluding blades and the pole itself). A three-year limited warranty covers the batteries and charger.

“Operator safety and ergonomics are driving key tooling decisions in the industry,” said Mike Guarrera, Senior Product Manager for BURNDY. “By using battery powered hydraulics to actuate the tool, users spend less time on live lines and significantly reduce operator strain and fatigue compared to the manually operated solutions available today.”
