Stop Unauthorized Access to High-Voltage Electrical Connections with the Powertite Lock Collar

Disconnecting an energized cable is extremely dangerous since it can expose an employee to arc flash or electrical shock. That’s why only qualified and authorized electricians can access these types of plug and connector connections. Electrocution accidents result in an estimated 350 employees deaths annually and 4,000 serious injuries, according to OSHA statistics.

In the face of this hazard — one that greatly impacts the construction industry — Emerson has introduced its new Appleton Powertite Lock Collar. This simple device fastens over Appleton Powertite 60 Amp and 100 Amp plug and connector connections, and can be used with similar models from Crouse-Hinds. Once attacted, it is secured with a padlock to stop unauthorized personal from disconnecting the cable. While it comes with a provided keyed padlock it also works with standard lock-out padlocks such as American Lock from MasterLock.

How safe are your employees? Let’s consider the example of a welder working in a small, compact and cluttered shop. The welder may want to move a heavy 100 Amp cable out of their way that is blocking them. And despite knowing the safety code, he may not wait for an electrician to come, and will take it upon themselves to disconnect and move the cable. At 100 Amps, the cable carries enough electrical current to cause heart fibrillations resulting in death if touched. Installing a Powertite Lock Collar reduces a company’s exposure to risk and liabilities from injury or death, while increasing the overall safety on-site.
