Since the 1970s, ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) have boosted the safety of electrical receptacles by shutting off current to the outlet upon detection of a ground fault on the line. Once installed, these wiring devices were intended to be manually tested at least monthly by users, according to UL 943, the Underwriters Laboratories standard that guided their design. However, recognizing that consumers rarely, if ever, pushed the test and reset buttons to ensure successful operation was maintained, an updated version of that UL standard now requires monitoring to happen automatically, within the device.Read more
