It's A Crazy World
By Bill Floyd

The election season is almost in full swing and this is easily one of the most peculiar races in my lifetime. And, all sorts of events continue to happen as we march forward.

What a week they've just had in Orlando, Florida. Two crazy shootings and a rogue alligator brought the media to town in droves. Enough reporting has been done by the "regular" media but this column wishes to just add its condolences to the victims and their families.

Submetering Panelboards Help Owners Track Energy Use
Chuck Ross

Submetering – the ability to track electricity use by individual circuits – is becoming increasingly important, thanks to increased attention in a number of state and national building codes. For example, the latest edition of the California Energy Commission’s Title 24 energy code is requiring the ability to submeter by building system in new construction and major renovation projects. And even where local codes might not require it, submetering can be very useful for owners of multi-tenant buildings who want to fairly allocate monthly utility expenses to individual tenants.

Poke-through Devices and Applications
Steve Maurer, IME

Earlier this year, I attended a seminar in Austin, Texas. The seminar was held in a large conference room, located on the upper floor of a popular hotel.

The room was fitted with double gang outlets on the back and right-hand wall. All the power to the attendees' laptops and other electronic equipment was powered from that side wall.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better When it Comes to Panelboards
Chuck Ross

Size can be an important consideration when it comes to specifying panelboards, and in this case, bigger isn’t always better. Electrical closets take up valuable real estate, especially in smaller office and retail settings, so contractors often are seeking the smallest products that will safely meet their customers’ needs and maybe even allow some room for future expansion.

Installing Tray Cable to Code
Rick Jones - Product Marketing Manager - Appleton Group

Are your customers terminating Tray Cable (TC) with standard cord grips?  If so their installation does not meet code.

“…But I’ve been installing Type TC cable for years with standard cord grips, what’s wrong with that?”

This is a typical response from an installer and the logic is hard to challenge if you are not familiar with the NEC code.
