Volume 16 Issue 464

The electronics company LG identified a new phenomenon called low-battery anxiety. People become nervous, distracted, and frustrated when their phones are about to die. If you are not familiar with low-battery anxiety, it's a real condition that primarily affects people with no actual problems.

Thanks to the Police
By Bill Floyd

The electrical industry and construction are synonymous. Jobsite safety, re-routing traffic, equipment unloading and building security create an ongoing partnership with police. Sometimes that relationship is light and routine. But at all times there is a serious backdrop. The consequences of them not being there can be grim or even catastrophic. Bottom line is most cops are good folks who care about their community and who are trying to simultaneously make a living and a contribution. Do the screw up? Don’t you? But there would be no order to our society without them. With few exceptions most of our lives are not on the line when we go to work.

Timer and Time Clock Tech
Steve Mauer, IME

Early timers were simple, electro-mechanical devices. Interval timers used a set time-period for load control. For instance, I used interval timers to control fans in cooling sheds. Using a 10-minute interval timer, the fans were set to come on two minutes out of every 10.

Other timers have up to a 24-hour interval with as many as 12 on/off operation settings. They are often used to control lighting, signs, fans and conveyors. Pool heaters, blowers and pumps can be connected to them as well.

When to Install and How to Select a Cable Support
Rick Jones - Product Marketing Manager - Appleton Group

Cable Supports are used to support cables in vertical raceways or risers.  They relieve the strain that would be placed on terminations, the interior of panels, or other devices to which the cables are connected.  Properly designed cable supports must not only be capable of supporting a given weight of cable with a good margin of safety, but must also support the cable without damaging the insulation.
