Are Manufacturers and Distributors Any Closer To Understanding Each Other?
By Bill Floyd

The manufacturer sets up his new website and loads it up with all his information- videos, latest products, catalog, press releases and more. The thought here is to become a deep resource to anybody who wants to find, understand, and specify his product. It's the right thing to do but too often it ends there. There is no way to pull the trigger on this site and buy the product, nor is there a way to group this supplier’s products with those offered by complimentary manufacturers. So as satisfying as a state-of-the-art web presence may be, it's just a beginning.

One Device to Test Them All
Chuck Ross

Fiber-optic technology offers the advantage of highly efficient data transmission – increasingly important in today’s networked facilities – but only if cabling and connectors are installed correctly. As a result, testing the speed and reliability of an installation has become an important element in the completion of many projects, and the many clients now see the results of such performance tests as required deliverables from the contractors they hire. These developments have made network testing equipment important xxxx in any contractor’s toolbox.

Transfer Switches – Protecting Lives and Property
Steve Maurer, IME

A few years ago, our area was hit by a major ice storm. As my wife and I stood in the yard, we could hear the cracking and crashing of huge tree branches all over the neighborhood. One man down the street cursed loudly every time one went smashing onto his truck.

Easier Testing of Long Fiber-Optic Cable Runs
Chuck Ross

Optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs) are frequently used tools for investigating the integrity of long fiber-optic cables – those longer than 800 ft. – and cable plants with splices. In addition to troubleshooting current problems, they also are used to document the baseline performance of new cable runs for future comparisons. However, operating these devices can be a complicated process involving time-consuming configuration of test parameters, and the resulting data can be difficult to understand.
