Technology can be paralyzing. In any situation where the participants
are confused, conflicted or feel inadequate the tendency is to do
nothing which is almost always the wrong move. You might be frozen in
your tracks for a short while if a tank was about to run you over, but
it would either be short-lived or your successor would be reading your
eulogy while trying to not look too elated about the opportunity you
just handed him. Usually offense is the best defense. This was the case
when distribution was first invaded by the big box stores.

The 2014 edition of the National Fire Protection Associations National
Electrical Code expanded required locations for arc-fault circuit
interrupters (AFCIs), adding kitchens and laundry areas (along with
dormitory units) to the list of settings to be served by AFCI devices.
These additions were not unexpected, as the NEC has been on a path
toward greater use of these potentially life-saving devices over its
last several editions. However, greater use of AFCIs can mean more
detective assignments for electrical contractors, because tracking down
the source of an arc fault can be tricky business.

As technology for detecting both ground faults and arc faults has
progressed, the National Fire Protection Association has updated its
National Electrical Code (NEC) to reflect the safety benefits of circuit
breakers and outlets incorporating this protection. With the 2014
edition of the NEC now requiring arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs)
in locations where ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) already
were mandated, manufacturers have begun combining functionalities to
make life easier for electricians.
