Hurricane Matthew!
By Bill Floyd

Category 4 - Shazam! Once again the "P" word (planning) enters our lives.

This Month's Smart eCat Features: Eaton Crouse-Hinds

With the popularity of the Internet, the world has changed. SMART eCAT is now one new important way. Each month we will feature a new manufacturer’s electronic SMART eCAT that will show how looking up products and using manufacturer’s catalogs have never been easier. This “eCatalog Collection” now also appears on our distributor partner and manufacturer rep’s websites as well. We encourage you to look for these there and deal with the companies with which you already have close relationships and work hard to serve your everyday needs.

This Issue's Question: Who introduced Premset, the new generation of MV switchgear featuring the innovative Shielded Solid Insulation System (2SIS)?

Single-Supplier Solution Aids Security-Device Compatibility
Chuck Ross

System compatibility is a critical issue for security dealers seeking to provide a truly complete solution for their residential customers. In today’s rapidly evolving Internet-of-Things environment, consumers expect to access alarms, thermostats, locks and other electronic devices through a single interface – preferably a smartphone or tablet app. For dealers and installers, this level of interconnectedness is becoming a must-have feature.

Residential Fire Alarms
Steve Maurer, IME

I'm a bit of an amateur chef. While I don't create the masterpieces my daughter does (she's a real chef), what I cook is at least edible.

Unfortunately, sometimes things boil over and the smoke rolls out of the kitchen. And yeah, the smoke alarm goes off, alerting everyone in the house that Dad's at it again.

Cut the Wires for Greater Flexibility in Fire Protection Design
Chuck Ross

Heat and smoke detectors are obviously necessary components for any fire-protection system, but installing these devices can pose problems in many retrofit applications. Traditional detectors are wired products, and adding new wiring to existing buildings can be a difficult and expensive process. It is in settings like these where wireless products are beginning to make inroads.

Solving partial vacuum effects with a vented bushing insert
Thomas & Betts

Flashover occurs between the exposed conductive elements of the connector to the closest ground, which is typically the bushing, as the components are separated, usually in the first ½ inch of travel. Data from field flashovers indicated a number of common factors:

- Flashovers occurred with connectors of all manufacturers.
- Flashovers occurred on unloaded or lightly loaded circuits. In the case of an insulated cap, the load current was zero.
- The rate of flashover increased with increased voltage.
- Flashover occurrences increased during cold weather.

Lutron Electronics Co., Inc.

Caséta Wireless: Save time with an easier 3-way

• No-neutral-required dimmer • Remote mounts without cutting holes • No wiring necessary for remote • Dimmers work with compatible dimmable LEDs (up to 150 W), and incandescent and halogen bulbs (up to 600 W)
