Hubbell Premise Wiring now offers new Category 6 and 6A field terminating plugs that allow for fast and secure direct-connect applications to wireless access points, IP security cameras and other security and AV systems throughout a location.

Hubbell’s new SP6 series plugs support 5 Gigabit networks while SP6A is designed to support 10 Gigabit links.

Both sets can be terminated by hand without the need for special tools, saving electricians and contractors time and money on installation. Termination is accomplished by simply inserting the conductors into the wire manager and then squeezing the plug body around the wire manager to terminate all eight conductors simultaneously. Re-termination is accomplished by reversing these steps. This termination method ensures repeatable, reliable terminations.

The plugs feature a die-cast housing to support shielded and non-shielded applications and a lace wire manger to speed up terminations. A cord compression nut provides uniform pressure and superior strain relief, while the slim width of the plugs is designed to support crowded telecom equipment closets. The plugs are Category 6A and Category 6 channel-compliant and feature universal wiring of ANSI/TIA-T568A or T568B, offering full 802.3bt (4PPoE) support, Type 3 and 4.

Direct-connect applications that can benefit from this type of “tool-less” connection include wire-less access points, HDBaseT extenders, IP security cameras and access control, IP audio, 10GBASE-T direct attach cable assemblies and transition cables.

Nate Herring, Senior Project Manager for AV and Copper Systems at Hubbell Premise Wiring, adds that the new termination plugs are also ideal for use with Hubbell’s new PoE (Power over Ethernet) lighting and controls platform.

“The convergence of building automation, AV , lighting and security on to the IT network is result-ing in many fixed network nodes,” Herring notes. “These permanently installed devices benefit from the flexibility of a traditional dedicated equipment outlet with patch cord. The latest revision of the TIA-568 cabling standard recognizes this and now allows for a direct connect connection. Direct connection involves terminating RJ45 plugs onto the horizontal cable and plugging in di-rectly to the device.”

“This is great for applications where you go into wireless security cameras and wireless access points, and now you have no more adds, moves and changes, just terminate the device on the horizontal cable and you are good to go,” Herring concludes.
