Students arriving at college campuses across the country this year will be welcomed back to classrooms with Lutron’s new Vive Wireless lighting control solutions, offering greater flexibility and control over lighting while simultaneously helping to shave energy costs and reduce facilities and maintenance expenditures.

In order to streamline building operations and enhance energy efficiency, college facility teams rely on lighting control systems such as Vive to facilitate quick response to day-to-day maintenance requests, and help monitor and control operating costs. Because Vive solutions enable the right mix of strategies – including occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting, load shed capability, and timeclock scheduling – the system can target the specific needs of each space to enhance overall lighting control performance.

Aggregated among numerous classrooms, lecture halls, labs, office space and common meetings areas across a typical college campus, the benefits can add up quickly. In one pilot installation of one building’s administrative offices, total electricity savings of 55 percent were realized as a direct result of the lighting and controls upgrade.

Even older buildings on campus can be upgraded to improve comfort and efficiency using wireless controls that save time and labor. “On a campus where some of the buildings date back to 1792, it’s not always feasible to have to fish wires through the walls,” notes Pat Henry, an electrician at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, where Vive was recently installed in two buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Henry also touts the benefits of scalability and flexibility. With the Vive Wireless solution, he says, lighting renovation can start with a small, pilot location, even as a stand-alone solution, and then be easily expanded through the use of Vive hubs to incorporate devices from around and across campuses.

“We can use the right mix of products in every space from open offices, to classrooms, to meeting rooms,” Henry offers. “It makes product bids, installation and programming easier and less time consuming.” View case study >
