Are Harmonics Always the Culprit?

When equipment acts up, facility maintenance people often blame the
problem on harmonics. Experienced maintenance people know how equipment
should operate. When a problem occurs, usually they can quickly
diagnose it. But some problems are unfamiliar and finding the proper
solution is difficult.
A facility installed new pump motor VFDs for energy savings. This
facility started to experience frequent failures on the motors of the
original installation, which had been retrofitted with the new VFDs.
