How Fuses are Classified
Fuses are generally classified by how quickly they activate. The desirable aim is to match performance with need. Fast acting (normal opening) fuses open quickly on overloads and short circuits, with no delay intentionally designed in. Very fast acting fuses open particularly quickly (current limiting fuses in less than 1/2 cycle) and are useful for protecting very surge sensitive devices.

All About Fuse Types: Part I
Regardless of how quickly they are designed to activate, all fuses protect circuits from the damaging effects of overcurrents the same way - by melting an internal wire or metal strip when the overcurrent exceeds the specified rated level, opening the circuit and stopping the flow of electricity.

All About Fuse Types: Part II
In contrast to a fast acting or very fast acting fuse, a time-delay fuse has an intentional built-in delay in opening when the rated current is exceeded, precluding needless opening within a specific time frame in response to the initial inrush current. When compared to fast-opening fuses, time delay fuses have an increased tolerance for overcurrents between approximately 200% and 600% of the fuse’s current rating.
