New GFCIs Feature End of Life Indication
A GFCI is a “people protector” that interrupts the electrical circuit very quickly when it detects even a small leakage to ground from the line. However, when it comes to helping ensure end user safety, knowing when the GFCI has reached its end of life is important.

GFCI Options Heighten Safety
A GFCI receptacle is a device that, installed in place of a standard
receptacle, detects current leakage to ground and interrupts the power
flow. Many older models call for monthly testing by the homeowner that
exercises the electronics and switching mechanisms. Most older GFCIs
allow resetting and provide power even if no longer able to provide
protection against ground faults. However, newer models have features
to help prevent consumers from using a GFCI no longer providing this
protection.
