GFCIs Boost Safety and Convenience
William & Patti Feldman
Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) protect people against
effects of electric shock that can occur when electricity is used near
water and a fault develops between the energized tool and ground.
In new construction or renovations, the 2008 NEC requires GFCI
receptacles or GFCI circuit breaker protection outdoors in patio, deck
and pool areas and indoors in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry and utility
rooms, carports, workshops, unfinished basements, crawl spaces, and
outbuildings as well as in locations where an electrically powered
mower, trimmer or other garden tool or drill, sander or saw might be
plugged in.
