One of the most dangerous conditions electrical workers can face in the field is arc flash.

Salisbury by Honeywell has recently introduced new personal protective equipment (PPE) that uses nanotechnology to improve arc flash safety gear.

The company’s PrismShield face shield uses a nanotech-applied coating to create a bronze-tinted lens, increasing color visibility and recognition significantly over traditional green-tinted shields.

Compared to traditional or legacy green-tinted shields, testing shows the PrismShield to transmit 25 percent more wavelengths of light, making colors clearer and more visible across the color spectrum. With green-tinted shields, yellows and blues can appear greenish and indistinguishable from one another, whites can become light green and reds can become a mottled grey.

Color recognition testing with the PrismShield offered the same color perception as not wearing a face shield, according to a Salisbury field study. The company further says that in a survey of electrical field personnel, the top desired feature for safety gear was a high-visibility lens that would provide full color recognition and better visibility.

Better color recognition and identification helps workers clearly see and identify differently colored wires and connectors within a cabinet, thus eliminating crossed connections that can lead to an arc flash or other hazards.

The bronze tint of the new face shield also offers better visibility in poorly-lit indoor rooms, while anti-fog technology built into the shield allows use for longer periods of time of use and anti-scratch technology protects the lens and extends product life.

The PrismShield is available in 12 and 20 cal face shields, with all Salisbury switch hoods and in both 20 and 40 cal versions of the company’s Lift Front Hood.

PrismShield lenses meet or exceed current ASTM F2178 and ANSI Z87.1 standard specifications, and are warrantied for a period of twelve months from date of shipment.
