Are Your GFCIs Too Fat?

Peter Walsh, PE

Residential contractors frequently face a struggle with coaxing a fat GFCI into an existing box with old wiring. Code section 406.4(D) sometimes requires upgrades to GFCIs when replacing existing standard receptacles.

Installing GFCIs in new work is usually not much of a problem. The code requires sufficient volume in the new box so that GFCIs and all the wires can fit without difficulty. Still, with 12 AWG sun-light resistant UF wire the tough flexing of cable can make you wish for more work space.
