The Industry Data Exchange Association, Inc. (IDEA) has developed an electronic catalog partnership with ElectricSmarts to help electrical contractors and equipment manufacturers streamline parts ordering.

The campaign is designed to better equip the electrical supply chain to use pricing data available in the Industry Data Warehouse (IDW) through Smart eCat, powered by ElectricSmarts, a web-based national list price catalog populated with complete, high-quality product and pricing data directly from the IDW.

ElectricSmarts populates the Smart eCat catalog with manufacturer-supplied and manufacturer-authorized data directly from the IDW. The IDW holds more than 2.4 million products, and this direct connection enables Smart eCat to receive real-time data updates as manufacturers make changes to their product information in the IDW.

Distributors subscribing to the IDW have access to the Smart eCat module, and can in turn provide access to their customers on distributor websites. Smart eCat also gives distributors easy access to the list pricing information they need to conduct customer negotiations and win bids for large industrial accounts and government contracts.

Manufacturers who have authorized Smart eCat to access their IDW data increase the visibility of their products in front of large industrial and government buyers, on distributors’ websites, and in estimating systems and mobile apps used by contractors, specifiers, and other end users. End users can receive a direct feed of manufacturer-supplied pricing information for required list price verification, change orders, and bidding.

IDEA and ElectricSmarts are also committed to expanding Smart eCat’s reach to government purchasing agents looking to validate price quotes during the procurement process, with support from the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

Most importantly, product information is available directly from within contractors’ estimating software, where projects are specified.

Having the same IDW product data reside in both distributors and contractors databases allows each to speak the same language, according to officials from both IDEA and ElectricSmarts. Retrieving product information and pricing and synchronizing the contractor's needs to a distributor's on-hand stock becomes quicker, smarter, and more efficient, they say, and greater efficiency and speed results in accurate bids and increased sales.
