Lighting is a large component of a commercial building’s total energy
use, comprising more than 30% of total energy consumption, according to
2010 figures from the National Institute of Building Sciences.
Additionally, inefficient lighting fixtures can add a significant heat
load to building interiors, making air conditioning systems work hard to
maintain comfortable temperatures. As a result of both these factors,
both lighting fixtures and their controls are the targets of increased
scrutiny under increasingly strict energy codes.
