Appleton HEX LED Series Exit and Emergency Egress Lighting For Unparalleled Safety and Reliability

Industrial facilities must have an Emergency, Escape, and Rescue (EER) plan in place whose object is to ensure the safety of personnel during an emergency. Among other requirements, the plan must include the installation of bright, reliable emergency lighting for illuminating a pathway to safety. NFPA 101, the National Electrical Code (NEC 70), and the OSHA (1910) require emergency lighting in all commercial and industrial buildings to facilitate emergency egress of people from the building and to reduce the possibility of panic during the exiting of large numbers of people during an emergency. Based on 700.12 of the NEC, emergency lighting loads must also be automatically energized or re-energized within 10 seconds of the electrical power outage and stay energized for at least 90 minutes or for the anticipated time of the building evacuation.

As one of the world’s largest suppliers of industrial lighting, Emerson and its Appleton brand has expanded its Appleton HEX LED Series of egress lighting to include Exit and Emergency signs, Exit Sign/Emergency lighting system combinations, and standalone Emergency lighting system units that meet NFPA, OSHA and NEC code requirements.

Reliability in the face of harsh industrial environments is critical to the success of emergency lighting. This is why every detail of Appleton HEX Series lighting systems emphasizes dependability. In addition to their ability to withstand wide temperature ranges, the systems are rated for NEC Class I, Div. 2 areas where flammable and explosive gases and vapors may be present such as facilities processing chemicals, paint, petrochemicals, and LNG, or in water and wastewater treatment plants. Fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate housing, UV-stabilized polycarbonate lenses, stainless steel hardware, 6kV surge protection, and die-cast aluminum mounting brackets ensure industrial-grade reliability. Standard models are operational in cold weather down to 32°F, with extreme temperature models also available equipped with an internal heater and a battery blanket, resulting in an ambient temperature range of -4 °F to +122 °F.

Appleton HEX Emergency lighting systems and HEX Exit/Emergency lighting combo units feature 6V DC or 12V DC rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries to provide failsafe backup operation for 90 minutes or more within 10 seconds of a power outage, providing needed illumination for evacuation. Self-diagnostic circuitry troubleshoots battery operational conditions monthly, bi-annually, and annually, removing the need for manual testing. If a failure is detected, the visual status on the LED indicator lights up immediately to alert maintenance personnel to perform needed repairs. Diagnostics testing can also be prompted on-demand using the included magnet flash.

In addition to the emergency lighting systems and exit/emergency lighting combos, Appleton is offering HEX Exit and Emergency signs for placement near exit and entry doors, walkways, tunnels, stairways, and fire alarm call points. Their all-in-one, low-profile design makes the signs easy to install. Lighted indicators are visible for 40 feet in all egress directions.
